Transport museum for Isle of Man
BY Pete Hayman

A plan to establish a vintage transport museum on the Isle of Man looks set to take a step forward following further discussions between government departments on how implement the project.

The Manx Transport Trust (MTT) has been awarded permission to use an aircraft hangar at Jurby to house a collection of historic vehicles which include trams and buses currently stored at Homefield Garage in Douglas.

Talks have been held between the chief minister and the ministers for tourism and leisure (DTL), local government and the environment (DLGE) and trade and industry (DTI).

Following the discussions, the MTT will be able to use the hangar after the DLGE agreed to rent the facility at a nominal charge to the DTI, after the department revealed that it would not be able to fund the full cost of renting.

DTL minister, Martin Quayle, said: "We have always supported the principle of a Manx Transport Museum but our proposed contribution of £50,000 had become unaffordable.

"Through cross-departmental co-operation, a solution has been found and the public will now have access to previously unseen historic vehicles including some loaned by the department."
