Major facelift for Hertford arts venue
BY Pete Hayman

Hertford's Castle Hall is set to undergo a major refurbishment after East Hertfordshire District Council (EHDC) agreed to appoint architects to draw up detailed designs for the scheme.

EHDC has already earmarked £600,000 to revamp the venue, which could include a new gallery space, a new café and a dance studio, as well as the possibility of screening cinema-quality films and a professional pantomime by Christmas 2010.

Architects will now be appointed in order to secure planning permission and to fully cost the scheme before a further report is brought before the council in order to secure the necessary funding to meet the updated costs.

Linda Haysey, EHDC executive member for community development, leisure and culture, said: "This is not about tinkering around the edges, changing the colours of the seating. This investment is about putting the show on the road."

A draft business case drawn up by the council - based on the refurbishment and the proposed changes that will increase Castle Hall's use - will see the venue's annual subsidy cut by at least £700,000 over the next decade.
