More funding for Penarth pier restoration
BY Pete Hayman

Penarth Arts and Crafts (PAC), the organisation behind plans for the £3.9m restoration of a Grade II-listed pier pavilion in Penarth, South Wales, has received additional funding from the Vale of Glamorgan Council (VGC).

The council has agreed to contribute a £15,000 grant towards the scheme, following a decision by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) last November to award PAC a first-round pass worth £99,600 to help develop detailed proposals for a full £1.63m grant.

VGC's grant will form part of an £800,000 funding package already committed towards the repair and restoration of Penarth Pier's Pavilion, which will include a local cinema, a casual restaurant and a heritage space featuring maritime information.

Council leader Gordon Kemp said: "The proposed development is viewed as an essential part of the regeneration of the popular seafront and will benefit local people and the thousands of annual visitors."

PAC was initially turned down in its application for HLF support for up to 60 per cent of the refurbishment costs in December 2008, but has now been given the green light to move to the next stage of planning to rejuvenate the historic pavilion.
