Sunesis Leisure concept launched by Scape and Willmott Dixon

Scape and Willmott Dixon have launched the new version of their standardised build concept Sunesis for the UK's leisure industry, following its success in the education sector.

Sunesis Leisure - unveiled at the Local Government Association conference today (26 June) - is designed to offer public sector clients a quick procurement route and ready-made design solutions.

It is anticipated the approach will reduce the overall build programme from inception through to opening by 12 months, as well as helping to achieve 25 per cent in cost savings.

As reported by Leisure Opportunities last month, Sunesis Leisure will allow clients to develop a wide range of facilities - including swimming, fitness, sports and spa areas.

Sunesis Leisure offers three designs, which have been created with the help of industry experts and each contain a swimming pool and learner pool of varying sizes.

From there, the design can be customised to the client's needs, with additional facilities such as a health and fitness suite; spa, sauna and therapy options; and a sports hall available.

Scape development director Steve Elkin said: "Local councils keep telling us that they can't afford to manage, run and upgrade or develop existing facilities, especially those with pools.

"Closing such centres down often makes economic sense, but isn't an acceptable option from a social perspective, particularly as the country is gearing up to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"We've listened to this feedback, and have come up with a solution that will help authorities to provide a high quality facility that is commercially viable and can trade without subsidy."

The Local Government Association conference at Birmingham's International Convention Centre runs from 26-28 June.
